Schooling in the late 18th century

(Ages 9 and up)

(15-20 minutes)

This presentation traces the origin of schooling in the American colonies to the Puritans in the early 1600s, and reviews why education was of such importance to them. How and when children began to learn to read and write is discussed, with examples of classroom teaching aids exhibited. Additional topics reviewed include the alphabet as hand written and printed in the 18th century, as well as the pencils, pens, and papers of the day. Pending time and attendee interest, inks of the era may be discussed, as well as letter writing and the folding of such into its own envelope. This presentation can be adapted for various age groups and available time.
